Division of Ophthalmology & Optometry

Our Division of Ophthalmology and Optometry is comprised of comprehensive multispecialty eye practices featuring twelve ophthalmologists and five optometrists dedicated to providing the highest quality eye care in San Diego County. Together, our division provides the full spectrum of eye care for our patients, ranging from comprehensive dilated eye exams to ongoing medical and surgical management of complex eye diseases in both children and adults. Our patients can be assured that they are being treated by some of the most highly trained and experienced specialists in the region. We perform approximately 2500 eye surgical procedures per year, in addition to thousands of office and laser procedures, making us one of the busiest subspecialties at Scripps Clinic.

To meet the growing needs of our patient base, our Division offers extended office hours, including convenient early morning as well as some evening and Saturday appointments, at six locations throughout San Diego.

In addition to providing expert patient care, we are committed to advancing the medical world’s understanding of eye diseases and their treatments. A number of our clinicians are active investigators through clinical trials testing new medications and devices for eye disease. We also are involved in basic science research on eye development and disease through Scripps Research and the Lowy Medical Research Institute.

The Division of Ophthalmology currently offers PGY-2 and PGY-3 internal medicine residents the opportunity to rotate through our clinics on a regular basis to familiarize them with basic ophthalmology conditions and treatments.

  • Dr. Friedlander is President, Lowy Medical Research Institute and Professor, Cell and Molecular Biology at Scripps Research and leads both basic science and clinical research with interests in angiogenesis and retinal vascular and degenerative disease.
  • Dr. Gariano is an Investigator in the Phase 3 clinical trial for Macular Telangiectasia.
  • Dr. Lin is Principal Investigator in the Phase 3 clinical trial for Macular Telangiectasia.
  • Dr. Mah is a Committee Member for the American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Pattern Cornea/External Disease, with an interest in medications and devices for treatment of ocular surface disease and cataracts.
  • Dr. Nguyen is Principal Investigator on multiple national clinical trials, with interests in new medical and surgical treatments for glaucoma and cataracts.
  • Dr. Ostrow is a Member of the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG), focusing on eye movements in children and control of childhood myopia.
